I think most people would agree that
the Mona Lisa by da Vinci is the most
famous and most recognized
painting in the world....
I was wondering why it's so famous, and I read
that it partially might have to do with the fact
that the Mona Lisa was stolen from
the Louvre in 1911, and at that time,
it was not famous at all!
But once the theft was reported in
newspapers all over the world,
it developed into a French scandal....
Over 2 years after it was stolen,
one of the thieves responsible
for stealing it tried to sell it to an
art dealer in Florence...
but the dealer was suspicious, and rightly so....
The dealer tricked the thief into leaving
the painting with him, the police were
notified and the thief was caught!
I think one of the marks of a
famous work of art is the amount
parodies it triggers....
and the Mona Lisa has
more than its share
more than its share
of parodies!!
